Communication Bridges

Scriptures in Use specializes in training non-western oral learners through an Oral Bible (a collection of stories from the Bible that are told face-to-face and memorized). Research shows the number of people groups where Evangelical Christians comprise less than 2% of the total population is 6,818 (unreached) groups out of 11,501 total people groups in the world. Sixty percent of the world’s population or 4.35 billion people are oral learners. Oral peoples experience difficulty receiving the Gospel when presented in a literate style.

The Method Jesus Used

Jesus told stories and parables. He pulled spiritual truth from everyday life. A verbally communicated story is more effective and has a way to connect with oral learners in profound ways. Jesus’ stories were commonly memorized and retold by the people who heard them. The stories were object lessons from everyday life. Jesus asked questions about the stories that helped the oral learner discover the truth. Jesus often repeated important themes; frequent repetitions are needed for oral learners to remember the story.

History of SIU

The recently released book “Building Bridges to Oral Cultures”narrates with chronological and adventurous detail, an extraordinary journey that began for Jim and Carla Bowman in the early 80s with a passion to share the Good News with a handful of the least-reached, indigenous groups in Mexico. Over the course of thirty years, their travels led to breakthrough discoveries and innovation in remote communities of traditional oral learners around the world. With time and God’s guiding hand, a new comprehensive, oral communications model emerged.
